1._How effective is homeopathy for first aid?
Most people are unaware of the many uses of homeopathy. It is very effective in first aid and will often avert prolonged suffering and disability. Following is a list of frequently encountered conditions with some common acute remedies. Other remedies may be indicated as the homeopathic prescription is always individualised. If you are prone to a certain condition, eg, dislocated joints, constitutional treatment is required.
| Cat: | Hypericum - punctured or lacerated wounds, prevents tetanus Ledum - punctured wounds or bites, wounded parts are cold |
| Dog: | Belladonna - heat with cold extremities, throbbing pain, worse jarring |
| Bee: | Apis - stinging, redness, itch, better from cold applications Ledum - punctured wounds or bites, wounded parts are cold Urtica urens - burning, inflammation, violent itch |
| Jellyfish: | Apis - stinging, redness, itch, better from cold applications |
| Wasp: | Ledum - punctured wounds or bites, wounded parts are cold |
3._Burns and scalds
Cantharis - raw, burning pain, better from cold applications
4._Chill
Aconite - from cold and dry, eg, air-conditioning
Nux vomica - from open air, worse in the morning
Rhus toxicodendron - from cold and damp
5._Eye injuries
Aconite - swollen, hard and red
Arnica - the first remedy for any physical trauma
Calendula lotion - a natural antiseptic
Symphytum - blow from a blunt object
6._Food and other accidental poisoning
Arsenicum - most commonly indicated remedy for food poisoning
Carbo vegetabilis - food poisoning with gas formation
Nux vomica - antidotes many poisons
7._Heatstroke
Belladonna - heat with cold extremities, throbbing pain, worse jarring
8._Jetlag
Homeopathic remedies are to be used judiciously. Hence, I don’t prescribe remedies for jetlag as people travel so often nowadays. Instead, there is a very simple ‘remedy’ that anyone can use: vitamin C! You have to start a few days before the flight, and stop only when you are accustomed to the new time zone. The dosage has to be higher than normal, as high as you can tolerate, ie, bowel tolerance level. This may range from 3–12 gms depending on the individual and the type of vitamin C used.
9._Knocks and falls
Arnica - the first remedy for any physical trauma
Hypericum - injuries to nerves, eg, fingers, toes, spine
10._Shock and fright
Aconite - fear, anxiety with restlessness
Gelsemium - fear, anxiety with prostration
11._Sprains and fractures
Arnica - the first remedy for any physical trauma
Ruta – sprains
Symphytum - fractures
12._Surgery and Dental operations
Aconite - fear of surgery
Arnica - the first remedy for any physical trauma
Calendula lotion - a natural antiseptic, can be used as a mouthwash
Hypericum - after surgery on areas rich in nerves
13._Wounds
Arnica - the first remedy for any physical trauma
Calendula lotion - a natural antiseptic
Hypericum - injuries to nerves, punctured wounds, prevents tetanus
Ledum - wounds from pointed objects, wounded parts are cold
Staphysagria - incised or lacerated wounds
